Letters to Turin

Turin Shroud clique attacked for incompetence, cronyism

June 9, 2004

The Diocesan Commission for the Shroud
Turin, Italy

Dear Commission members,

I have just read the English version of “SINDONE NEWS” No. 15 of April 2004, which contains remarks that I consider to be extremely inappropriate and infuriating.

There is a long passage citing Prof. Balossino’s arguments against the new claim published recently by two Shroud researchers that there are faint traces of a facial imprint on the underside of the cloth. Of course Prof. Balossino is free to hold and argue whatever view he wishes, but what is objectionable is the remark that the recent claim “has to be considered unfounded” because, among other things, “the researchers who spread it, have never seen the Holy Shroud directly, and so they lack the essential component of the visual interpretation.” One of the researchers in question HAS seen the Holy Shroud directly, but neither he nor anyone else in the world has seen the underside, apart from members of the so-called “Conservation Commission” and a few Turinese technicians selected by them.

This happened because the Conservation Commission decided to remove the backing cloth of 1534 and immediately affix a new one. This latter action can only be described as colossal stupidity. The reason given was that a new one was required to provide support when the Holy Shroud is publicly exhibited. The next such exhibit is planned for 2025. Why could the cloth not have remained with the underside accessible for scientific study for a few years, before a new backing cloth was affixed (if indeed there was even a need for one)? The underside had not been seen since 1534. It is now hidden again, “for who knows how long” as Don Ghiberti put it, seemingly without remorse.

To make matters worse, the two researchers mentioned above were denied access to any of the measurement data, photographs or microscope video recorded in 2002. In these circumstances, it is totally improper for members of the Conservation Commission, or members of the small clique around Cardinal Poletto that has been called “Il Gruppo di Torino” (The Turin Group), to make use of their insider knowledge to challenge the interpretations of others. And it is highly regrettable that the Turin authorities have rejected all legitimate requests from scholars for documents such as photographs and videos, or for minute quantities of material removed from the cloth in 2002.

It is doubly regrettable that during the last few months, when huge public interest around the world was focused on the Crucifixion, there was hardly a mention of the Turin Shroud. I am not alone in believing that the situation regarding the Shroud is now at an all-time low since its modern study began in 1898. The carbon dating of a single sample from a bad location led to the Shroud being universally dismissed as a medieval fake. And for some unfathomable reason, the Church has refused for more than 15 years (!) to allow even a single piece the size of a fingernail to be tested to confirm or refute the C-14 result, even though it has everything to gain and nothing to lose. This attitude simply defies logic and belief. As does the so-called “restoration” of 2002 -- a terrible and inexcusable tragedy in which valuable scientific data was destroyed, and great opportunities for proper scientific investigation were lost.

International research on the Shroud remains in a state of limbo because of these anti-scientific and ill-considered postures. In contrast, over the last three years, three coffee table books have been published by members of the Conservation Commission, using data and photographs obtained during the interventions carried out in 2000 and 2002, and apparently more such books are in preparation. How is it that only “The Turin Group” can have access to all these materials, publishing one book after another? What can justify such a double standard?

Meanwhile, the rest of the world still waits for some vague “peer review process” for the testing and conservation proposals from all other scholars -- incredibly, four years after proposals for research were invited. Many colleagues now believe that this invitation to submit proposals was a deception. Some say it was a device to conceal what was really being planned. Others feel it may have been intended to attract ideas which could then be considered for use by “The Turin Group.” It may have been both. What is certain is that, only A FEW DAYS after the deadline of October 30, 2000 for submission of proposals, an elaborate project was carried out in secret to study and scan the underside of the Shroud; there was no prior peer review or consultation with independent experts. How could this project be selected, clearly well before the deadline, without going through the same review process as all the others? How can such a deliberate, flagrant violation of the process possibly be justified?

I blame myself and others for not protesting against it in the strongest terms at the time. Only one person that I know of dared to speak out - Barrie Schwortz, in an editorial on his website in June 2001. He did so in clear and compelling terms; his was however “a voice crying in the wilderness.” We outsiders who had attended the Villa Gualino congress said nothing, failing to understand what was really going on. Our eyes would be brutally opened in August 2002.

Recalling the “spirit of Villa Gualino” now is very painful. For a brief moment in March 2000, it seemed as though a new era of real international cooperation and collaborative academic/scientific quest for the truth about the Shroud had dawned. Cardinal Poletto seemed like a dynamic church official who would re-ignite Shroud research. There was much idealistic rhetoric spouted at the conference, especially from the two conference co-presidents and from officials of the Centro. Shortly afterwards, all participants received from Don Ghiberti a warm fraternal greeting that was effusive in its description of the wonderful and fruitful time that colleagues had spent together. A line from Psalm 132 (Vulgate version) was cited: “Ecce quam bonum et quam jucumdum habitare frates in unum” (How good, how delightful it is to live as brothers all together.)

This memory is now a bitter, mocking irony. A more appropriate citation would be from Seneca: “Fallaces sunt rerum species.” (The appearances of things are deceptive.) Only now do we realize that all the high-sounding talk at Villa Gualino was empty, worthless. Now we see that there was never to be real international cooperation, or a true spirit of scientific inquiry. Instead we see all sorts of insider dealings and hoarding of data and opportunists taking advantage of their standing within the clique. Whilst on the outside we have the sad spectacle of a few individuals and organizations in the role of sycophants and lackeys hopeful of obtaining favor. Cardinal Poletto has indeed brought in a new era for the Holy Shroud, but it is the opposite of what began with such promise. Being extremely badly advised, and failing to seek independent expert opinion, he authorized the most grievous and deplorable damage to the relic in its entire history, worse even than the fire of 1532, since that event was an accident.

Tragic as it was, the effects of the fire on the cloth provided much useful information to 20th century researchers regarding the nature of the image. After the shock of the “restoration,” some researchers dared to hope that this new tragedy might at least provide some useful advance in knowledge, that something positive could come out of it, and that everyone might move on. Alas, this was not to be; all requests for information or samples have been flatly refused. The “peer review process” that is supposedly underway (for all study proposals from the rest of the world) has not been defined, the reviewers not named, the entire operation is secretive and subject to manipulation and outright rigging. Of course, the process was devised by the same people who decided on the abominable “restoration,” and it is being executed in the same machiavellian manner.

Furthermore, most proposals from 2000-2002 have been overtaken by events. There is now a significant amount of data collected and material removed from the Shroud that should be made available for study by bona fide researchers IMMEDIATELY. All the former research proposals need to be reconsidered in the light of this new body of off-cloth evidence. After the newly acquired information and material has been thoroughly studied, fresh proposals for direct testing of the relic should be drawn up. An open, transparent and fair process of peer review, by prominent scholars nominated by the international community, should then be initiated.

The present situation regarding the study of the Shroud is a huge mess, with a horrid admixture of incompetence, cronyism, double dealing, and backroom decision-making. This is unworthy of Turin and of the Holy Shroud. Is the Diocesan Commission for the Shroud willing to re-consider the process, and most importantly, to get independent professional advice? Is there anyone on the Commission who has a clue … that things are terribly wrong with the current situation?

Daring to hope that there is, I am

Sincerely yours,

William Meacham

I nostri occhi sarebbero brutalmente aperti in agosto 2002.

Sinceramente,

William Meacham

An Open Letter to Cardinal Poletto

The following is the text of a letter sent to Cardinal Severino Poletto in late 2003. To date there has been no reply. We urge Cardinal Poletto to release the very small amount of material required for this most important test.

Eminence,

The undersigned are members of an internet Shroud science discussion forum that includes scientists and researchers from all over the world. Ray Rogers and William Meacham, who are also members of the forum, submitted to you last month a proposal for new carbon dating on the Shroud based on various new information, including compelling evidence that indicate that the Raes/C-14 area is clearly anomalous when compared to the main part of the Shroud. We write to you to express our support for the Meacham/Rogers proposal.

Please note that the authors of the proposal and some of the signatories have had key positions in Shroud research. Ray Rogers is from the 1978 Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP) team. He is co-author of the one of the main summary papers by STURP, "Physics and Chemistry of the Shroud of Turin," published in the journal "Analytical Chimica Acta". William Meacham was involved in the 1986 planning meeting in Turin held in preparation for the 1988 C-14 testing. Dr. Robert Dinegar was a member of the STURP team and was the author of the C-14 proposal that STURP had submitted to the authorities. Barrie Schwortz was the documenting photographer for STURP and is the publisher of the renowned website www.shroud.com. Dr. Kenneth Stevenson was spokesman for STURP. Dr. Frederick Zugibe is a physician, a board-certified forensic pathologist and Professor at Columbia University who has studied crucifixion for over 50 years and has written books and articles about the Shroud. Dr. Giulio Fanti is Associate Professor of Mechanical and Thermic Measurements at Padua University and since 1997 has authored or co-authored two books, 2 journal articles and 17 conference presentations on the Shroud. Prof. Dan Scavone has authored many papers on the history of the Shroud. Joe Marino and Sue Benford developed the hypothesis of an "invisible" re-weaving in the area of the C-14 sample.

We hope that this proposal will be the first step to allow further investigations and a rigorous C-14 dating that takes into account data that has been discovered since 1988. As stated in the proposal: "The measurement that we are proposing COULD have an enormous and positive impact on the public perception of the Turin Shroud around the world, if it contradicts the earlier date. ... Alternatively, if the result is the same as that of 1988, it will have virtually no impact in the public arena..."

Sincerely,
